RAM or Random Access Memory is a component required on a computer. RAM will save temporary memory when you run an application or software. And if your computer is turned off, the memory stored in RAM will be lost too. RAM is also has limited size. Today, in Market, RAM is available with size variety such as 512MB, 1GB, 2GB and even up to 4GB..
If you run one or many applications will require RAM memory depending on how much memory is needed by the application. More applications are running, more RAM memory is also used. The problem is when memory has reached maximum limit of your RAM, your computer will be hangs even restarted automatically. But do not worry, these problems can be solved with Virtual Memory facility which has been provided by your Windows.
Virtual Memory can serve as a backup RAM that allocated from hard disk storage space that can be used any time when RAM memory usage has reached maximum limit. So when the RAM memory usage has exceeded maximum limit, the job is transferred to Virtual Memory. This process is also commonly called “Paging File”.
By default, Windows will allocate some percentage from your hard drive storage space. But the size is not optimal because Virtual Memory size should be adjusted to physical RAM size. An ideal Virtual Memory size is 1.5 X RAM size. For example, if you use 1GB of RAM, then ideal Virtual Memory size with 1GB of RAM is 1.5 x 1GB = 2.5GB. With that size, your computer will run optimally.
To change Virtual Memory size, just find Virtual Memory menu in My Computer Properties. By using Virtual Memory, you do not need to spend more money to buy new RAM. However, for stability and speed, RAM is more reliable. Because RAM is designed with these purpose, while Virtual Memory is only as a backup when needed.
